RICHARD NIXON
Republican
In office: January 20, 1969 – August 9, 1974 (elected for 2 terms)
Vice President:
Spiro Agnew (1st term)
Gerald Ford (2nd term)
RATINGRichard Nixon deserves a B for his time as president. He was the only president to serve two terms as both Vice President and President and also the only President to resign from office. He brought peace to the country and helped the average American Citizen.
GOALS: Nixons most important goal was peace in vietnam. He would successfully negotiate with North Vietnam and ended America's involvment in the war. He worked for friendly foriegn relations and economic prosperity of the country by increasing inflation. He wanted to gain arms control agreements with the Soviet Union. He would end his first term with controlled wages and prices making him extreley popular amoungst the nation.
CONGRESS: He started his presidency with a Democratic majority in congress. But this didn't stop him from getting legislation passed. He wbelieved in using the government to benifit as much of the country as he could. To do this he focused on environmental issues and the Environmental protection agency was formed. This agency aimed to protect human health and regulated the pollutants being used. Also the clean air act was passesd. It was the first significant environmental law passed in the United States. It enforced regulations to protect the environment and the people. Also the U.S. postal sevice was created and The Occupational Saftey and Health Act was created. This act protected employess from hazards in the work place.
NEGATIVE: The most negative act of Nixon's presidency would of course be the watergate scandle. This would eventally lead to his resination of his presidency. The scandle became known when members of the committee re-elect the president were cauught breaking into the Democratic party head quarters. Nixon used his executive powers to refuse releasings of tapes from the white house. This was an abuse of executive power and by doing this gave the executive branch too much power in our checks and balances government. During the watergate scandel Nixon's approval rating fell to 23%.
POSITIVE: The most positive act of his presdency was his involvings in foreign relations. When Nixon took office he needed to decide weather to change the policy involving the Vietnam war or consider South Vietnam a communist state. He approved of a secret bombing campaign to destroy the head quarters of the National Front for the liberation of Vietnam. He then was able to reduce the number of American soliders in Vietnam. Although he faced many protesters he helped bring peace to Americans. He aslo started the Gates Commision to end the draft saftley. As China split from the Soviet Union Nixon used the tension to give the weat more power in the cold war. Nixon worked hard to improve relations with China.
LEGACY: Nixon must be noted for transitioning America from war. He reached nucluear controll agreements with the Soviet Union and began the endining of the cold war. He also began friendly relations with China. He helped organize the Allies future together with the Nixon Doctrine, expecting them to fight with their own soliders but providing them with aid. With the watergate scandle he brought the people a sckeptical view of thier politicains and a careful review of checks and balances.
CONCLUSION: In conlusion Nixon was a pretty good president. He deserves a B for his involment in foreign relations fianlly realising that isolationism is not the best policy for the country. He opened commmunications with many countries diplomaticaly and paved the way for a more peaceful future.
